Tulips go in once the soil is properly cold, which helps them dodge tulip fire (a fungal disease that likes things warm and damp). December at a push, if the ground isn't frozen — our autumn arrives early in Scotland, so don't leave it much later than that. Until then, keep the bulbs somewhere cool, dark and dry.
