'Tiny Temptations' stays small and tidy (around 40cm tall, 15–20cm across) and, instead of climbing like a tall cordon tomato that needs a cane and constant side-shoot pinching, it trails and cascades over the edge of a pot or basket. Less faff, more tomatoes. The fruit is small, red and properly sweet — and helpfully, it hangs on the plant for a good while without dropping or splitting, so there's no mad rush to catch it at the perfect moment.

It's also highly tolerant to blight and mildew — the two things that most often trip up a first-time tomato grower — which makes it a forgiving place to start. One honest heads-up: it's an F1 hybrid, which just means it's been carefully cross-bred for reliable, even cropping. Grow Guide

A trailing basket tomato is a kind place to begin — nothing to prune, nothing to stake. The one thing to get right is a steady start.

Sow indoors: February to April, one seed per fibre pot from your kit, sitting on moist compost and barely covered — about 5mm (¼in), just a light dusting of compost over the top. Keep it somewhere warm, around 18°C (anywhere from 15–20°C is the sweet spot). Seedlings show in 7–14 days.

Sow the marigolds at the same time, not later: 1–3 seeds per fibre pot. They grow alongside the tomatoes and get potted on and planted out with them — tuck one or two around the edge of your basket or pot.

Up here in Scotland, lean to the later end (late March–April). Not because the seeds care — they're on a warm windowsill — but because plant-out is later in Scotland (late May–June). Sow too early and your tomatoes are ready to go outside weeks before it's warm enough, and end up leggy and pot-bound while they wait.

Pot on: once the first proper (true) leaves of the tomatoes and marigolds show, move each seedling into its own 10cm (4in) pot to grow on somewhere bright and frost-free.

Harden off and plant out: after all frost has passed (late May–June up north), acclimatise them to the outdoors gradually over 7–10 days, then settle one plant into its final hanging basket or large pot in a sunny, sheltered spot.

A grower's trick: set the plant a little deeper than it sat before, up to its lowest leaves — tomatoes grow extra roots along the buried stem, which makes a sturdier plant.

Light: full sun, the more the better — sunshine is what sweetens the fruit.

With a tomato, watering is the whole game — get it steady and the rest largely looks after itself.

Watering: keep the compost evenly moist, and water around the base rather than over the leaves. The reason it matters so much: erratic watering — bone-dry then flooded — is exactly what causes split skins and blossom-end rot (a dark, sunken patch on the bottom of the fruit). A hanging basket dries out fast, so check daily in warm weather.

Wool pellets — when you plant into the final basket. Scatter the wool in a ring around the base of the plant, on the surface (not mixed in). It holds water in the compost and evens out the ups and downs — which, for a tomato, is doing real work against splitting and blossom-end rot. A loose ring, off the stem; wool swells when wet.

Comfrey and seaweed — once flowers appear. Fresh compost feeds the plant early on, so there's no need to feed at planting. Once it starts flowering, sprinkle about a quarter of the comfrey and seaweed evenly over the surface around the base, scratch it lightly into the compost (so it gets past the wool mat to the roots), and water it in. Repeat every 4 weeks — that's four feeds, which is enough for the whole season. The comfrey's the star here — it's potassium-rich, and potassium is the "flowers and fruit" nutrient (the very reason people reach for a bottle of tomato feed). The pellets break down slowly, so each feed keeps working for weeks. Feed earlier only if growth looks pale.

Pick as the tomatoes colour up — usually mid-to-late summer into autumn, a bit later up here in Scotland. The more you pick, the more fruit the plant sets, so keep going over it.

One of this variety's charms: the fruit hangs on the plant for a good while without dropping or splitting, so there's no mad dash to catch it at the perfect moment.

And the real reward: there's nothing like the first warm cherry tomato eaten straight off the plant, sun still on it, before it ever reaches the kitchen. Grown from a seed on your own windowsill — that first burst of sweetness is the whole reason people fall for this tomato.

None of these mean you've failed — it's just a tomato telling you something.

Split skins, or a dark sunken patch on the base (blossom-end rot): both come from uneven watering. Keep the compost steadily moist — no drought-then-drench — and both settle. This is the single most common tomato hiccup, and it's fixable.
Tall, pale, floppy seedlings: reaching for light. Give them your brightest spot and keep them a touch cooler once they're up.
Lots of flowers but no fruit: the flowers need pollinating. Outdoors, bees usually handle it — but on a still balcony, a gentle tap or shake of the plant on a warm day helps the pollen along.
Blight or mildew: this variety has a reputation for shrugging these off better than most, but good airflow and watering at the base (not over the leaves) keep it on the front foot.
Slugs on low-hanging fruit: the joy of a hanging basket is it's mostly out of reach, but keep trailing stems off the ground, and the ring of wool pellets around the base of the plant helps.
Aphids or whitefly: tomatoes make happy neighbours with basil, chives (both in our Zing Ping kit) and French marigolds — all reckoned to help see these pests off.
